Event Information
If you have spent enough time working with—or being—graduate students, you have probably heard of the academic hidden curriculum. That is, the unspoken set of rules and practices that tenure-track and tenured scholars regularly carry out to ensure professional success while uninitiated graduate students crash into some occasionally and miss many others as they work on their degree. Although mentors have increasingly become more involved in guiding students as they learn to identify and navigate these implicit conventions, this is not yet a standardized practice, and it is still the case that students are largely responsible for this education. So, what constitutes the academic curriculum in 2025? How is it staying hidden? What can be done to level the playing field for the uninitiated?
Join Winnie E. Peréz-Martínez for a brief workshop to address these questions amidst the scarcity tenured positions and the growing awareness of alternative-academic (alt-ac) careers. We will consider the politics behind choosing your thesis committee, how to build a strong support network, your work options besides teaching, and how to choose extracurricular opportunities. The hidden curriculum is more effectively visible through multiple varying perspectives, so please bring your questions, experiences, and expertise on the topic.
